St. Luke’s Organic Garden (SLOG) has been in existence for 11 years.  In 1991 the Catholic Bishops put out a document “Renewing The Earth -- An invitation to Reflection and Action on The Environment in the Light of Catholic Teaching.”  It is a comprehensive work addressing a broad vision of the presence of the Universal Creative Spirit of God right here on our planet. 

The first paragraph of the document reads: ‘At its core the environmental crisis is a moral challenge.  It call us to examine how we use and share the goods of the earth, what we pass on to future generations, and how we live in harmony with God’s creation.”  I invite/urge each of the parishioners here at St Luke’s, to read and study this magnificent document.   

 Our response here at St Luke’s, was to begin a small organic garden project behind the cemetery.  It offers individuals the opportunity to grow healthy food while helping:

To restore the purity of air and water.

• To halt the loss of farmland

• To sustain ecological diversity in plant and animal life.

 Parishioners, townspeople, anyone who wishes to have a small organic garden are welcome.  We have 36 small patches, measuring approximately 15’ by 20’.  Two feet aisles divide each patch and over the years we have fenced in the area.  We have two small buildings donated by Carolyn and Bob Mostecki, former parishioners, both of whom have died. One building is a sort of office (Earth Literacy Center) and the other a tool shed.  We have acquired some garden tools and a wheelbarrow.  We have a compost pile.

World Missions Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ. you told your apostles to proclaim the good news and to make followers of all nations. They gave their lives to you. and for you, to spread the Gospel throughout the world. Today, the faithful still strive to bring your name to those who need it most. Give your strength to missionaries around the world who give their lives every day in lands far from home. Help those charged with bringing your word to be an example of you for those who cannot read your word for themselves.

Help those who do their work in your name to inspire others to seek you as their Savior. We ask this through you, Christ, our Lord, Savior of the world. Amen.
