Ancient synagogues had a raised area with a reading desk where the word of God was proclaimed. As Christian communities began to designate specific buildings; they usually continued the custom of using a raised and central place for the proclamation of scripture.
Our ambo is fashioned from mahogany wood. It's prominence in the sanctuary is meant to highlight the centrality of the scriptures in our liturgy. Its proximity to the altar evokes the connectedness of hearing God's word to our participation in the Lord's Supper.
O God, you satisfy the hunger of our hearts
with the sweet nourishment of your word.
We pray that in this church we may listen to the voice of your son,
so that, responding to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
we may not be hearers only, but doers of your word.
