Baptism is the sacrament by which we become members of the Christian community. Through the waters of this font, the Church becomes the mother of many children, rejoicing in new members added to the Body of Christ. For this reason, the font of baptism has been understood as the womb of the Church, its sacred waters bringing forth new life.
Our font is faithful to ancient Christian styles in which the font was actually a shallow pool into which candidates for baptism were either immersed or bathed. The location of our font facilitates the participation of the whole congregation in the celebration of baptism. The font's proximity to the altar evokes the connection between our baptism and our sharing in the eucharist.
O, God, by the sacrament of rebirth you continually increase
the number of your children. Grant that all who will come forth reborn
from this saving font may by their way of life give glory to
your name and add to the holiness of the Church, their mother.
